When I attended college during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, I noticed that there was mass confusion about how to find COVID-19-related information and how people should use this information.

As a result, I attempted to seek a solution via a health information-based mobile application in order to make information-seeking & usage more efficient, convenient, and reliable.

Due to the broad scope and various options, I needed to narrow down my focus and prioritize the main user flows. As a result, I chose to concentrate my research and design efforts on the most frequently used and accessed COVID-19-related information.

User interviews, user personas, sequence modeling, and affinity diagramming were conducted to understand users. I wanted to be able to understand what information they are looking for, how they are using it, and the steps they take to accomplish tasks.

Key findings from the affinity diagram showed confusion in finding accurate information efficiently, a general feeling of being uninformed, reliance on social media and interactive maps for information gathering, and using information for travel, health decisions, and safety.

After analyzing the research findings, I identified two user types. However, many users exhibited a blend of both, often switching roles depending on the circumstances.

Stakeholders felt overwhelmed with multiple apps/websites for news, appointments, and tests/vaccines, causing confusion and stress. Tasks were often lengthy, causing users to lose sight of their goals or progress.

Stakeholders were often required to carry vaccine cards at all times to enter places or travel, and log daily symptoms on a website repeatedly. This process was deemed to be unnecessarily repetitive and annoying, and carrying documents also runs the risk of losing or damaging them.

Reliable information is crucial; 85% of users prioritize it for COVID-19 updates. While social media offers speed, it can also spread misinformation without proper sources. The fast-paced release of COVID-19 updates, driven by high demand, poses risks.

The news page shows updated, vetted, and important news depending on a user's location. These are from government-based publishers and major news publishers. Users can browse or search to easily find specific news articles or categories.

Research revealed users expect easy browsing and filtering of news articles. Sub-categories within Major Headlines and Local News were necessary and selected based on user research.

Users can use an interactive map to view the COVID-19 situation in their entered location. It breaks down cases and deaths by county over various time periods, aiding travel decisions and local health awareness.

Manage and Use Your Info With Ease

The tracker page enables you to securely store your vaccine card image for convenient access, reducing the risk of physical damage. It also features a daily symptom checker with easy sharing options, along with a dedicated section for finding nearby testing & vaccine sites.

Choosing to focus on three main pages turned out to resonate well with users and helped limit my scope. 75% found the overall experience improved. 80% found reliable information better. 95% preferred obtaining case and death data through the interactive map. 60% found the daily symptom checker convenient for expediting their process.


Looking back, I would have prioritized researching health information ethics. Prototype testing revealed that 60% disliked the COVID-19 vaccine card storage feature due to privacy issues and preferring to store it in their camera roll.


This was a very fulfilling project where I was able to grow as a problem solver and designer. I am proud to have came up with a solution that seemed to help make people's lives a bit easier during a time where there was so much uncertainty and stress.
